I'm a girl who found a beautiful farm and began collecting "pets" in the form of Llamas and Alpacas. As I spent more and more time with these gentle creatures, I realized that there was an opportunity to share this experience with the local community. Here is how it all began:

Once upon a time...

I started this little business with the goal to share the relaxing and soothing experience I have when surrounded by my animals. They are calm, gentle, funny, kind, comical and loving animals (sometimes they can give a little bit of attitude). I want to create a place where people can meet, walk and learn about alpacas and llamas and have fun while doing so.

Hi, I'm Samantha

2020

I met a very special llama named Lluka at an alpaca walking business where I grew up. From that moment, I was hooked and dreamed of owning my own llamas one day. You know when you meet an animal and develop an instant and deep connection with it, well that is what happened with Lluka. That same year, I went back several times that to visit and walk Lluka.

2021

At the end of December 2021, I was presented with the amazing opportunity to purchase Lluka. At that time, I didn’t have a farm of my own, but I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to purchase my dream llama. With the help of some friends, I found a place to board him along with two alpaca friends, Denver and Alex. Instantly, My heart became full and I was the proud owner of my dream llama and two fluffy ‘pacas’. During the first year with these boys, I learned a lot. I would visit my boys several times a day and besides doing ‘chores’, I would just sit with them. I spent most of the lockdowns with my boys…I called it my Happy Place!

2023

Spring of 2023, I decided to move fully to the Blue Mountain area as I figured it would be an amazing location to offer this same walking experience to the public. I didn’t have a farm secured at this time, however was able to board my boys at "Kickin Back Alpaca Ranch" in Markdale. I knew my boys were at great place that specialized in camelids and it was close enough where I could visit my boys a couple of times a week.

2023

In October 2023, it became apparent that Lluka needed some fellow Alpaca friends, so I purchased Todd and Llewis to join the herd. Lluka is 300 pounds and unfortunately doesn’t know his own strength against a 150 lb alpaca. My dream started to come together when I found Lluka's forever home and in October 2023, and I purchased Todd and Llewis. I had only had spent 3 weeks with Todd and Llewis when their crazy llama adventure started and we all know that story.

so, without further adieu ...

interested in learning more about the farm?

The history of this property is unique, evolving over the past century from a working farm to a horse farm and now transforming into our ultimate vision: sharing this remarkable location with like-minded people.

about the farm

Being young and aspiring to become a homesteader is a dream that doesn’t often align with today’s economic realities. The cost to start a homestead is simply too high for most.

When I set out to find the perfect property for my alpaca experiences, I knew I would either need to rent part of someone else’s land or find a farm that shared my vision. Being close to the tourism area made the search even more challenging.

A small group of friends and I had similar aspirations of becoming farmers. The idea of pooling our resources to buy a property seemed promising. However, we soon realized that farms in the Blue Mountains were more expensive than most places in Ontario. Then we discovered a property for sale by owner that was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! It was being re-naturalized by the seller, with beautifully groomed walking trails and roadways throughout. It had enough pastures for the animals and ample fields for my partners' dreams of growing wholesome, unadulterated fruits and vegetables, along with a few building envelopes for future plans.

paying homage

Being “on the mountain” provides the ultimate terrain for outdoor enthusiasts. The majority of the fields receive all-day sun, each with its unique natural experience, featuring peaks, valleys, forests, and water features.

The property is uniquely L-shaped, facing North-South on one side and East-West on the other. It boasts an abundance of old-growth fruit trees still producing apples, pears, cherries, grapes, and plums, along with a wealth of natural foraging foods. The fields were replanted with native grasses and flowers in 2021/2022.

The North-South fields offer stunning views from the highest point, known as the Sunset Plateau, overlooking Beaver Valley to Georgian Bay. At the lower end, two ponds envisioned by Tina add to the landscape. We plan to expand on her vision, enhancing these water features.

The East-West fields provide incredible views of a hidden valley, leading to vistas of vast forests and the far end of Beaver Valley. An early morning walk to the high point of these fields is truly inspiring. The deepest part of this valley houses Indian Creek, teeming with life, rapids, and scenic beauty, where trout race upstream, and deer and beaver are often spotted.

Hiking the entire path network and taking in the surroundings is a half-day adventure. The Tina Gray trail system will launch in the Spring of 2025 for those who share our passion for the outdoors and nature preservation.

the property

Due to the high costs of starting a farm, a group of like-minded individuals joined forces to achieve our goals collectively. I have always found peace and joy with my animals and want to share these experiences with others. My partners come from diverse backgrounds, including hospitality and horticulture. Together, we decided to name the property Back of Blue Farms, due to its location behind the Blue Mountain ski resort. Each of our visions will shape the experiences we offer at the farm, contributing to our long-term goals.

We are committed to overcoming any hurdles before publicly announcing new ventures.

Stay tuned, come visit, and watch us grow!

the vision

We met Tina Gray, who was selling the property. She walked the land with us, sharing every special aspect and her vision for it. A former veterinarian beloved by the community, she was concerned about the absence of many bird and insect species that once inhabited the area. The fields, heavily farmed for decades, had become almost lifeless.

Tina embarked on a mission to restore the fields to their native habitat, aiming to repopulate these species and rejuvenate the soil. The results of her efforts are breathtaking. The combination of her work and our desires felt like divine intervention. We reached an agreement to purchase the property. With her assistance and our vision, respecting hers, our dreams began to materialize. Tina’s continued support and encouragement have been inspirational.

In her honour, we are dedicating the kilometres of walking trails throughout the property to Tina. These will soon be part of the experiences we offer. Tina, we cannot thank you enough for your incredible support. Your vision will live on with us forever. We love you! Thank you!
